Sunil S. Patel, MD, joined Rockford Gastroenterology Associates, Ltd in 2010. He is board certified in Gastroenterology. Dr. Patel completed his medical school training at New Jersey Medical School, a residency in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School in Boston, and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center/University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Dr. Patel is the Director of RGA’s Research Division, which actively conducts and publishes clinical research as well as having conducted various treatment trials for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Constipation, Hepatitis C, and Colon cancer Prevention.
In 2015, Dr. Patel developed RGA’s Fecal Transplant program and introduced this novel therapy to the Rockford area. Currently, the procedure involves the transfer of bacterial flora from a healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of the recipient for the purpose of treating a serious bacterial infection called C. Difficile colitis.
Dr. Patel is Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He enjoys teaching medical students and participates in the gastrointestinal lecture series for second and fourth year students. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Patel is well trained in the broad discipline of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
