Dr. Mark T. Shiels is clinical associate professor
of medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford and is
in private practice at Rockford Gastroenterology Associates, Ltd. since 1983.
Dr. Shiels earned his medical degree from Mayo Medical School, Rochester,
Minnesota. Dr. Shiels completed his internship at Mayo Graduate School of
Medicine, Rochester, Minnesota and his advanced clinical residency in
gastroenterology/hepatology at Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation, Rochester,
Minnesota. Dr. Shiels is board certified in internal medicine and
gastroenterology. Dr. Shiels is on the active staff at SwedishAmerican Hospital
and OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center.
Dr. Shiels is also a member of many medical
societies such as the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American
Gastroenterological Association, American College of Physicians, American
College of Gastroenterology, American Association for the Study of Liver
Disease, and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Shiels' main area of interest is hepatology,
specializing in the management of alcoholic liver disease, viral hepatitis,
autoimmune hepatitis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and end stage
liver disease. He also has an interest in biliary tract disease and has many
years of experience in diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP.
