Dr. James T. Frakes is Clinical Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the University of
Illinois College of Medicine at
Rockford
and is in private practice at Rockford Gastroenterology Associates, Ltd. He is an expert
in the fields of therapeutic pancreaticobiliary endoscopy (ERCP), practice management and endoscopic
ambulatory surgery centers.
Accomplished in teaching and clinical research,
Dr. Frakes has authored over 100 publications in distinguished scientific journals, has edited four
books and has written 13 book chapters dealing with gastrointestinal endoscopy. He has presented approximately
300 invited lectures at national and international gastroenterology meetings and has directed 30 national or
international courses. A leader in teaching, medical education, clinical practice and organized medicine,
Dr. Frakes has received the Faculty Distinguished Teaching Award, the Faculty Distinguished Service Award and
the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford. In 2007 he
received two major awards from organized gastroenterology; he was recipient of the Distinguished Service Award
from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) for long-term contributions to the field of
gastrointestinal endoscopy and to the ASGE and was designated a Master of the American College of Gastroenterology
(MACG) for stature and achievement in clinical gastroenterology and teaching, and contributions to the ACG. He
has been selected by physician colleagues for inclusion in the book The Best Doctors in America yearly since 1996.
Dr. Frakes is a past president of the American Society for Gastrointestinal
Endoscopy (ASGE). He has also served on numerous ASGE committees and several committees of the AGA and ACG and the World
Gastroenterology Organization (WGO/OMGE). He has been designated a Fellow of the ASGE, AGA and the American College of
Physicians, as well as a Master of the ACG. Outside of medicine, he serves on the University of Illinois Foundation and the
Athletic Board, and is a past member of the board of directors of the University of Illinois Alumni Association.
Dr. Frakes earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He
completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Missouri Medical Center, Columbia, Missouri, and his
fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He currently resides in
Rockford,
Illinois
with his wife; they have two grown children.
