Robert Barclay MD
Dr. Robert L. Barclay is clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine and joined Rockford Gastroenterology Associates in 2001 after completing his subspecialty training in Gastroenterology.  Dr. Barclay received his Bachelor of Science with Honors and Master of Science in Biology from Queen`s University at Kingston, Ontario, Canada.  His Masters thesis explored novel inflammatory mechanisms of acid-induced esophageal disease.  After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Toronto, he returned to Queen’s University at Kingston to serve his Internal Medicine residency and his Gastroenterology fellowship.  During the final year of his GI fellowship, he received specialized training in endoscopic ultrasound in Marseilles, France, a recognized center of expertise in this technique.
In addition to being skilled in the cognitive and procedural aspects of gastroenterology and liver disease, Dr. Barclay brings unique attributes to Rockford Gastroenterology Associates, Ltd.  His clinical interests include endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and liver disease. His research interests include the study of the pathophysiology of acid-induced esophageal disease, and strategies to optimize the safety, efficacy and tolerability of bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy.  He is the author of numerous scientific papers in these fields, presents regularly at Digestive Diseases Week, the world’s largest meeting dealing with gastrointestinal disease, and has received several awards for his research endeavors.
Dr. Barclay takes a thoughtful approach to medicine and to gastroenterology, by combining a sound knowledge base, procedural expertise and strong ethical values to meet the individual needs of his patients.
